Why should a media company like Sky care about the environment?

Sky passionately believes that everyone – businesses, governments and individuals – has a responsibility to combat climate change. It doesn’t matter that others might have a bigger impact; our responsibility is to deal with ours.

So since 2006, we’ve searched for ways to manage our environmental impact. It’s still early days but we’re quite pleased with our progress:

  • We were the first media company to become CarbonNeutral®.
  • Over the last 3 years, we’ve reduced our carbon emissions by 27%.
  • Sky sites and offices are powered by 100% renewable energy.
  • Our Bigger Picture website encourages and supports our staff and viewers to take action on climate change.

That was just the start. Sky has cut the power use of their set top boxes by half and recently introduced a clever new feature that puts Sky HD and Sky+ boxes to 'sleep' when they're not in use overnight, potentially saving enough energy to keep all the refrigerators in Birmingham cool for a year.

Sky has learnt a lot about being an environmentally friendly media company. Dealing with our direct impact is crucial, but we also need to reach out to our viewers and help with theirs. Green Shoots will find even more talent and innovation to inspire the millions of Sky viewers who would like to be a little bit greener.
